Blasé men, patronizing family members and above all pushy superiors: “Men and other misfortunes” is the entirely appropriate title of the novel upon which the film is based and duly determines the life of young office worker Pegg (played by Tora Teje with fine irony), Baby, Eva und Emmy in Per Lindberg’s oft-comic NORRTULLSLIGAN. The rigors of long days spent at small desks, typing in harmony, are followed by social evenings in their shared apartment, where they dance, laugh, dream and eat in relaxed fashion. The four of them can rely on each other, just like the secretaries in the office, who eventually go on strike. The film is based on the emancipatory novel by Swedish writer and women’s rights pioneer Elin Wägner, who strongly criticized Lindberg’s decision to bring the end of the film in line with the social norms of the time.
